Cataracts hinder your vision and eventually rob you of your ability to do so many of the things you love. That’s the bad news. The good news is that at Eye Institute of Essex, you don’t have to simply submit to the effects of this eye disease. Surgery for it is safe, effective, and can produce results that give you back a degree of vision you probably thought you could never have again.
The cause of cataracts is a buildup of proteins on the outside of your natural eye lenses. And while the condition can develop at any age, it is most common from age 65 and up. Early on, you may not have any idea you have cataracts, let alone need our Kearny eye surgery. The disease develops slowly, and is often detected as part of a yearly eye examination. When it does reveal symptoms, the most common are cloudy and blurry vision, though you may also notice problems driving at night and perceiving colors, as well as possible double vision. Special eyeglasses or contact lenses correct your vision in spite of cataracts, at least until they don’t. When that stage is reached, that’s where our Kearny eye surgery comes in. It involves the removal of your natural eye lenses, and the replacement of them with prosthetic lenses that are called intraocular lens implants, or just IOLs. They are equipped with either monofocal or multi-focal vision correction, as decided by your needs as well as what your insurance will cover. With the monofocal IOLs, you may need to continue using reading glasses, but the outcome is that your vision will be restored back to at least an adequate level, and possibly even more than that.
